|
Vagabundos, the DJ, club, and event collective from Luciano's Cadenza stable, returns for what promises to be a huge year, and kick-starting it all is this double mix album from two of the Vagabundos DJs: Andrea Oliva and Argy. These two 12" vinyl samplers include full length mixes of six of the tracks featured on the upcoming compilation. Argy's selection includes the awesome Robert Hood remix of Boys Noize, and two late 1990s house cuts from Harmony Funk and YMC, long since out-of-print.

Summer 2011, and Argy, aka Argyris Theofilis stands at the edge of international stardom. He's grown from leading light of the new underground to one of the world's hottest properties, and this is the album that will quite possibly change everything (again). Fundamentals is the sound of house music reconfigured and redrawn for the new era, with the attitude and soul of Chicago and Detroit rerouted via Berlin. Argy's already long list of accomplishments reads like those of a producer twice his age -- from the hotly-tipped prodigy who gave the world "Love Dose" and one of electronic music's most precocious debut collections, Focus On: Argy (PFR 021CD/LP), to the production wunderkind whose discography is a wish-list of highly-respected imprints, including Ibadan, Poker Flat, Cocoon, and Objektivity. But this is only half the story. Argy represents the coming of age of a generation of producers who've grown up with dance music all around them, who've embraced innovation and technology from a young age, and for whom dance music is beyond a lifestyle; to them, it epitomizes a way of life, a global network of individuals, peers, clubs, and fans who cross every continent. From Luciano and Jerome Sydenham to New York's The Martinez Brothers, Argy's collaborations span previously unconnected worlds, brought together with a shared desire to break down boundaries and barriers. This is also exemplified by the releases on his imprint, These Days. Released on Jerome Sydenham's highly-respected Ibadan Records, Fundamentals is a fitting addition to a label that's featured the cream of the world's house producers, from Dennis Ferrer and Kerri Chandler, to Joe Claussell, Function, Joris Voorn, Radio Slave and beyond. Fundamentals synergizes nostalgia with a forward-thinking ethos that has come to exemplify Argy's work. The retrofitted house of "Party People" and "It Feels So Good" sits neatly against the classic futurism of "I'm In," "NY Anthem," and "Indulgence." The sheer production quality of tracks like "String Poetry" and "Dinner At Kerri's," and the Latin-influenced rhythms of "Absent Friends" tempered by sublime piano arrangements, are testament to Argy's ability to imagine, write and produce deeply musical, yet state-of-the-art electronic music. "Upon Ourselves" (featuring Bajka) and "Peace Of Me" (featuring Posh) show his skill in crafting purpose-built dancefloor gold, as evident as ever.

Argyris Theofilis is back under his Argy moniker. This record is deeply rooted in the club, made in the spirit of the golden years of the White Island end of the '80s/early '90s. "Wish You Were Here" (also featured in a dub version) and "Tari Tari" are like some futuristic nuggets from Alfredo's record box with its big bass lines, dreamy synths and pianos plus some carefully-sprinkled acid sounds. Argy also remixes the Zodiac Free Arts Club track "N.A.O.E."

German DJ/producer Argy has managed to become a leading figure in the most recent wave of house music producers, and now he presents one of his favorite clubs in the world, D.EDGE, via a mix CD on his much talked-about These Days label. Located in futuristic yet classic and tumultuous São Paulo, Brazil, D.Edge is believed to be one of the leading and most influential clubs. Its design and artistic direction, alongside its very passionate and dedicated following, have made D.Edge an institution for modern house and techno music, having high profile guests performing throughout the whole year. After the club's invitation for Argy to perform there and visit the city for a short period of time, a strong bond was created, and the artist felt the need to express this enthusiasm through his most immediate medium. In this mix, Argy does what he does best, which is to effortlessly combine old classics with a modern club sound, in the process creating a remarkable sonic energy. The musical journey is mixed in a more natural and less computerized "real club DJ mix" style, with wonderful dynamics, key-perfect mixing and with a music lover's sensitivity, combining a broad spectrum of different colors and textures throughout the CD, while always remaining constantly connected to the venue's sound. The audio collage, featuring Kerri Chandler, Motor City Drum Ensemble, David Alvarado and Aril Brikha, to name but a few, leads you through at least four different mind states from darker Detroit melodies, to percussive DJ tools, classic NY house, and finally, euphoric techno. The beautifully-curated and stunning product includes a mysterious hidden track of recorded Brazilian wild forest ambience. Last but not least, the CD includes an electronic download voucher that offers the songs as separate, full length tracks. An exclusively in-house production made with great care and passion from music lovers and aimed at like-minded people. Other artists include: Etienne Jaumet, Christian Vance, Art Of Tones, Jaw, Reelsoul & Alix Alvarez, Argy & DJ Said, Filsonik, Jerome Sydenham, Dennis Ferrer, Kaoz, DJ Duke, 51 Days, and Ribn.

"These Days was founded in January 2009 by Argy as a platform on which to present his own more personal material and the work of artists, both new and old, that fit his vision of contemporary, soulful club music. The label begins with a three part connecting series of records which remains musically unrestricted by the traditional concepts associated with the common EP. The first part, Day One by Argy, showcases three very different tracks, referencing some of his most important influences up to now. Within these pieces he displays the ability to work closely with session musicians and sourced artists to create a more improvised live sound, showing also his talent when structuring song like pieces or even approaching the sensitive idea of making a cover, as in his version of the 1994 classic 'Bottom Heavy'."

Double LP version. Following on from Guido Schneider's enigmatic Focus On album, Poker Flat introduces the next in the series, Focus On: Argy. Comprised partly of new and exclusive productions by Argy alongside well known and upcoming names and highlights from his back catalog of releases and remixes, the mix acts as a showcase for Argy's unique style, influenced by strong, energetic peak-time house through to deep and spaced-out percussive journeys. Hot collaborations with Solomun, The Mole, Maral Salmassi, DJ Gregory, Jerome Sydenham and Bayoga traverse through an impeccable selection of modern house music. Each brand new and exclusive track featured on the vinyl release is a fresh collaboration between Argy and another producer or musician, and the concept dictates that both must have an active part in the recording of the track. Traversing the spectrum from the intense traveling grooves of "Anenome" with Solomun to the evolving percussive workout of "Under No Illusion" with percussionist Bayoga, there are endless delights on offer. Teaming up with Canadian-in-Berlin The Mole, the two producers' love of funked-up filtered sounds comes through like a sizzling afterhours jam, which contrasts rather nicely with the neo-tribal rhythms of the essential "Our Drums," a track produced alongside DJ Gregory. Jerome Sydenham gets in the studio with Argy and the result is a tranced-out deep and dramatic cut with powerful chords. Focus On: Argy is a mature, dedicated and insightful journey into a true artist of our time.

"After Liebe Detail Spezial has been launched very successfully with a series of Move D remixes, the label now presents its first proper artist EP. It is coming from Greek producer Argy, who already made himself known through various releases on Poker Flat. '1985' on the A side generously spreads an old school vibe by using massive organ stabs. At the same time it couldn't sound less modern. '1985' is a wonderfully driving, up to date house hit. On the flip Jerome Sydenham does what he does best with his remix. He manages to stay close to the original, yet streamlining it into one of his very hypnotic and powerful dubbed out jams. Argy then finishes the EP off with a track simply called 'Tool' where he focuses on a massive percussive groove floating through gloomy, spaced out atmospheres."

Argy takes on the challenge to compose this year's summer soundtrack. From South America, to Africa and Persia, the young artist presents us his global music influences through a modern-electronic sound. "La Pasion," a collaboration with singer Lara Ramos, clearly presents the artist's passion for house music. "Third Night in Lebanon" is a reduced percussive piece with an intelligent arrangement of organic sounds, while the final track treats us to a sweeter, mood-changing experience. "The Waves" is structured around a steady groove of airy and wet percussion layered with intriguing, spacey effects. Once again the young Greek combines innovative production with a raw sound full of passion and soul.

"Argy is Argyris Theolis. Born in Rhodes, Greece the 20-year-old artist is currently based in London. The title track is a very subtle and hypnotising tune. Initially unoffending it builds into the perfect soundtrack for a haunted house. But the spooky Spanish vocals by Valeria who demands her 'dose,' cynical laughter and creepy clock samples just form a guard of honour for the amazing acid-fueled synth-lines which drill into your skullcap. There could have been no better remixer than the one and only Luciano who keeps the original atmosphere, but adds a snappy attitude to the track and lets the synth-lines badly oversteer. A killer remix! 'Hide and Seek' on the flipside completes the package with a dubby minimal house-beat and spooky samples such as a mumbling moaning and reverse messages."
