Amsterdam's cult producer and DJ Steven van Hulle, aka Awanto 3, likes his samples vibrant, his drums wobbly, and his synths sweaty as a Detroit summer breeze. The MPC wizard returns to Dekmantel delivering his second, full-length album. Gargamel is arguably his most compelling piece of work. Spread over the course of nine tracks, van Hulle shows he's capable of serving up many different styles and genres in his ever-expanding arsenal. The Rednose Distrikt affiliate kicks things off with his friend and co-producer Darling. "Azrael" builds over shuffling, infectious rhythms, a cluster of vocal stabs and heartfelt keys. "This Is When We Met", "Why Don't You", and "Gargamelancholia" on the other hand, are aggressive, batty-jackin' peak-time tracks embracing classic acid aesthetics, while "Positive Negative" is a stretched-out house jam incorporating the tussle of wonky boogie and tribal bumps. Van Hulle drops the tempo on "Hooli Goose", taking slow release hypnosis turns while making a marching band sound cool. The dry drum machines, melted bass and schizo sounds of "Ride The Dragon" will appeal to the freaks, and the dreamy "Happy Bird" is a tripped-out set of ambient and lo-fi themes. Last but not least, Dexter enters the stage to do what he does best with "Thick": show who's the boss of the 808 with a straight-up electro essential.

Amsterdam's cult producer and DJ Steven van Hulle a.k.a. Awanto 3 likes his samples vibrant, his drums wobbly and his synths sweaty. The MPC wizard returns to Dekmantel delivering two new club cuts bursting with wonderful weirdness. "Pregnant" continuously builds around a vocal that keeps you locked in, while the beautifully constructed synth progressions show van Hulle's keen ear for melody. On the flip, Van Hulle serves-up a new fresh cut. "Star Butchers" is a jazzy deep house gem. The bonus Darling edit of the latter, is co-produced between van Hulle and the Darling, who is responsible for the keys.

Under his Awanto 3 guise, Steven van Hulle has long been considered a producer with immense potential. Now he's finally delivered on that promise with Opel Mantra, his stunning debut album. Opel Mantra twists house music into intoxicating new shapes, fusing a myriad of global influences into one thrilling, surprising whole. This is clandestine, atmospheric deep house as you've never heard it before. And boy, does it sound good. Anyone with a keen interest in the Amsterdam electronic music scene will be familiar with van Hulle's work. He's already released a number of acclaimed solo singles on Rush Hour (his loose-limbed, decidedly cosmic debut, For Five, appeared in 2010), alongside highly-regarded collaborations with fellow Dutch producers Tom Trago (under the Alfabet alias), Young Marco and San Proper. To date, though, his output has been limited to a handful of inspired productions. Having had a glimpse of his talent, Opel Mantra proves his credentials once and for all. This CD offers more than enough proof. Bristling with humid atmospheres, voodoo rhythms and tropical grooves, it fuses heavy African and South American influences with contemporary deep house sounds and grooves.

Awanto 3 strikes again with part two of his debut album, Opel Mantra. Includes the cut "Baila Con Paula," which is a collaboration with the Dutch nine-piece Afrobeat ensemble Jungle By Night. Opel Mantra Part 2 offers another stunning quartet of tracks that effortlessly join the dots between deep house, jazz, dub and Latin beats, with some sneaky nods to the futurism of Detroit techno thrown in.
