Tom Trago has decided to pay tribute to Yamaha's DX7 synthesizer by using it as inspiration for Serene Waters. Five sparkling, spacey and melodious tracks, from the delicate and rush-inducing melodies of dreamy, deep electro opener "Harvest" and the two contrasting mixes of "Opulent"; variations on a throbbing, futurist techno theme rich in glacial melody lines, bustling synth-bass, and spacey chords. "XYZ" is a crunchier and snappier electro outing and "Rain Room", nestled in the center of the EP, sees Trago manipulate his machines to get a far more psychedelic sound.

Dutch producer Simon Weiss returns to action for the first time since 2:48 EP (2015). Weiss blasts off via "Brain Fever", where raw, mind-altering arpeggio bass, fuzzy drum machine hits, spacey chords, and alien electronics thrust skywards. On the deeper and more melodious "You Want A Cigarette", Weiss's vocoder vocals wrap themselves around mutant TB-303 lines, rush-inducing chords, and clattering machine percussion. On "Space Ghetto (Booty)", Weiss offers his own unique take on electro-funk with kaleidoscopic, full-throttle electronic motifs, and funk-fueled synth-bass. "Intro" is a beat-free excursion with melancholic chord progressions and heartfelt vocoder vocals.

Efde's showcases his trademark sound on his first release on Amsterdam-based label, Voyage Direct. "My Bleep" is a spine-tingling re-imagining of Detroit futurism built around sparkling, intertwined melody lines, dusty drum machine rhythms, hissing hi-hats and throbbing, analog bass. The original's beauty is emphasized further on the "Ambient Mix" which recalls the glory days of Pete Namlook's FAX Records. The spacey chord progressions, sprightly synth-bass and restless rhythms of "Just Did It" captures the spirit of both the motor city, and the classic UK techno-funk. "CMP135" draws on Efde's love of bumpin' US deep house whilst retaining the intergalactic sounds.

Darling presents Jacob's Lead, a truer reflection of the shadowy producer's previously hidden talents. The title track's restless, hypnotic rhythm tips a wink to classic Dutch techno of old, while the undulating, analog electronics and swirling pads recall the far-sighted retro-futurism of vintage Motor City material. Darling heads towards deeper territory with the bubbling melodies, starburst electronics and saucer-eyed chords of "Video". The interstellar electronics are once more pushed to the fore on closer "80 Axes", where jaunty synth lines combine with soft bongo hits to create an instinctive rhythm, and intergalactic melodies sprint between the speakers.

Tom Trago has supplemented a nonstop schedule of DJ gigs, remixes, and studio collaborations by using Voyage Direct to promote the music of Dutch producers old and new, including Aardvarck, Boris Werner, Maxi Mill, San Proper, Elias Mazian, and Magnesii. Here he delivers his first solo single since 2013, "Hidden Heart of Gold," with virtual waves of ambient chords, eyes-closed melodies reminiscent of classic stargazing techno, and disembodied vocal samples over a tough but unfussy machine drum rhythm and addictive bassline. The "Ambient Mix" is a winding, beatless excursion brimming with hazy, late-night beauty. Gentle, immersive, grandiose.

Aardvarck aka Mike Kivits returns to the throbbing analog techno he so successfully explored on 2014's Plus Det 12" (SKUDGE PT010EP). With "Thanxxx Joch", he launches a rolling Detroit-influenced techno onslaught with the kind of sharp, in-your-face riffs that stir memories of sweaty early '90s warehouse parties in far-flung Belgian outposts. On "Hump," the sci-fi synthesizers, fizzing electronics, and bubbling melodies tempt one to gaze skywards, but the beats -- a combination of thunderous drum machine kicks, dusty snares, and African-influenced hand percussion -- keep things grounded. Why peek towards the heavens when you can get lost in the groove?

Voyage Direct presents the debut 12" from fast-rising, Amsterdam-based DJ/producer Elias Mazian. "Future Times" pits attractive, far-sighted synthesizer melodies and spacey chords against cut-up hip-hop vocal samples and a righteous, snare-heavy groove. Like Mazian's DJ sets, it draws on a myriad of influences, from beatbox electro and Kraftwerk, to 21st-century European deep house and Detroit techno. "They Don't Know" features heavy machine drum rhythms inspired by Mazian's love for old Dance Mania releases. Peppered with classic hip-house breaks, it sounds like a delicious fusion of B-more, DJ Rush and early British "intelligent techno."

Strong one on Voyage Direct from Rotterdam's Benny Rodrigues. Here are two undulating, hypnotic, heads-down tracks that blur the boundaries between house and techno. Rhythmically loose but impressively tough -- like all of Rodrigues' best productions -- both cuts are built around mesmerizing late-night grooves and intoxicating chords. "Master French" kicks things off, lacing nagging shakers, subtle synth strings and fluttering chords over a robust, shuffling tech-house groove. Rodrigues works the mix like a master, bringing elements to the fore before sliding them into the background. "Z" is an altogether breezier affair, with repetitive, new age-inspired synthesizer melodies seemingly drifting over a rock-solid house groove.

Amsterdam-based producer Magnesii delivers a stunning debut 12" for Tom Trago's Voyage Direct label. Raw, fuzzy and in turns melancholic, spellbinding and intense, its three tracks bubble and hiss to the distinct sound of vintage analog hardware. He jams out tunes on a tasteful selection of analog gear, sequencing with either the Alesis MMT-8 or the Akai MPC2000 -- a favorite toy of many of the Netherlands' best electronic producers -- and adding basslines, beats, acid lines and melodies on obscure synths and drum computers. His creations are then bounced down straight to 1/4" tape or cassette.

Amsterdam producer Boris Werner has an impeccable track record of creating fiercely hypnotic, otherworldly techno and tech-house. Here, he lets his imagination run wild with two tracks that join the dots between vintage Motor City futurism, relentless acid jack, synth-laden deep house daydreaming and Jeff Mills'-style sci-fi fantasies. "Acid Casino" sets the tone, offering a hypnotic, ever-building trip into late-night acid-tech territory. "Upstairs or Downstairs" is a formidably woozy exploration of otherworldly techno with a distinctive deep house twist. Moody, atmospheric and intoxicating, it rises and falls like a star burning out in slow-motion.

William Kouam Djoko returns with Deflourished. After a year with a lot of high highs and some deep lows, William found himself on the dancefloor listening to a set by Chicago footwork specialists DJ Rashaad and DJ Spinn. William experienced what religious people might call a divine moment. All the experiences, emotions, and soul-searching from the previous year came together in one emotional, energetic moment. William tried to recapture all of this in his studio the next day and within hours, Deflourished was created. A pure form of energy shared by William for everyone to enjoy, hopefully as much as he enjoyed creating it.

Tom Trago's Voyage Direct series brings us another Amsterdam-based talent with the debut release by Interstellar Funk, who delivers the haunting and sleazy "House Train," which is backed up with a Makam remix. With its raw drums and deep bass line, "House Train" sounds like an '80s Chicago production; however, the vocals give the track an unique, timeless character. Oddly addictive. On the flip, Makam adds an extra drive to the track with its forward drums and synth lines.

Maxi Mill came up under the wings of Tom Trago, co-producing some of Trago's tracks, like "Steppin" Out" or "200 B.C." This is his debut release and showcases his love for raw, dirty and syncopated house music. A hot debut from a producer we will surely hear more of soon. Another Voyage Direct banger.

2012 repress. In 2010, Tom Trago started selecting tracks for Voyage Direct, which presents a collection of his favorite producers and tracks. House Of Jezebel aka Legowelt takes us back to the warehouse days with his epic version of soul classic "Love & Happiness." Granted, this sample has been used a few times before, but this is simply one of the strongest versions ever to appear. Comes as a vocal and instrumental version.
