Since an impressive stint as musical director for Henrik Schwarz's Instruments project and the subsequent release of 2013's Holla (SUNDAY 007EP), Johannes Brecht's reputation has grown steadily with a series of carefully crafted 12"s. "Nuages" hinges on a sinuous, snake-charming synth line. Instantly memorable, it's an exquisite headphone experience that's equally deadly on the dancefloor. The lilting "Sirènes" teems with ideas, its big kick burnished with a dancing synth motif and a chamber orchestra of synthetic strings. The motorik 12-minute "Fêtes" contrasts its knotty, brittle piano line with sustained pads and bright, striking syncopations.

SMR 010EP

Johannes Brecht follows up his previous Sunday Music release, 2013's Holla EP (SUNDAY 007EP), with In My Time of Dyin', a reflection of jazz and classical minimal music into electronic music. Deep trippy music with a strong swing on the A-side. Cleverly written patterns with a hypnotic vibe. Side B features a live jazz version in 6/8 signature on piano and drums (with the drummer of German pop star Max Herre). When a classically trained musician looks into electronic music and manages to bring together the best of both worlds the results can be very exciting.

Stuttgart native Johannes Brecht marks his first outing on Steve Bug's inimitable Poker Flat Recordings with an exceptionally atmospheric EP sure to make its mark with the deeper end of the DJ fraternity. "What's About" bumps along with an irresistible groove, incorporating a sweet guitar lick and various backward synths before a sick bass line arrives to lift the track yet further into the ether. It's house music for music lovers, and sure to go over big with discerning dancefloors. Likewise, the epic 11-minute "You" develops with a sense of style and restraint often missing in the club, and revolves around beautifully-realized synth pads over a crisp, punchy rhythm.

Mule Musiq announces the debut release of the brightest hope in the German deep house scene, Johannes Brecht. His real debut 12" on Henrik Schwarz's Sunday Music was highly-acclaimed and he is a member of the Henrik Schwarz Band. Here, Johannes delivers a killer vocal tune. It was a secret weapon on the Mule summer 2012 tour, and when this track was dropped, people went crazy even though nobody knew what it was. The original version is definitely a peak-time tune and the dub version is a cool DJ tool.

SUNDAY 007EP
|
Henrik Schwarz reactivates his long-inactive Sunday-Music label for this release from Johannes Brecht, a classically-trained musician who plays bass and keyboards and also writes music for orchestra. "Holla" is a beautiful deep monster with one of those touching synth lines that you don't want to ever stop. "People" is a jacking house track that bursts of energy and "Bob" shows that Johannes also can leave his fingerprint in a more minimalistic environment.
