MEANDER 026LP
|
Lyra Pi from DeWalta is five synthesizer and score-like modern ambient works that mark the first release of a new series by Meander. The Meander Horizon Pi Series is a departure from the label's well known dance floor releases. Lyra Pi is also the second part of the complementary Lyra album project. The full album contains a double LP (Lyra (MEANDER 025LP, 2018)) as well as the present album. Combined with the separately available Lyra double LP, customers can create a three-LP box set. Lyra is a constellation in the northern hemisphere which is highest in the midnight sky in the early summer months. It contains one of the brightest stars in the sky: Vega. Many of the songs on this album were produced during these warm and gentle months during an inspirational creative time in Portugal. In Greek mythology, Lyra represents the Lyre of Orpheus, Apollo's son. Made by Hermes from a tortoise-shell, it was given to Apollo who then passed it along to Orpheus. It is said to be the first music instrument ever made. 180 gram vinyl, handmade see-through screen-printed PVC sleeve, plus insert card with artwork.

Lyra is DeWalta's fourth large solo project and third full-length solo album following Wander in 2012, llumination in 2014, and Dark Matter in 2017. The album consists of two individually available parts: a double LP (Lyra) with six tracks, as well as a single LP (Lyra Pi (MEANDER 026LP, 2018)) with five synth and ambient works. The ambient part launches a new Meander series, a departure from Meander's well-known dance floor releases. Lyra is by far DeWalta's most extensive and refined project to date. With 11 exclusive songs, a total running time of over 100 minutes (plus a collaboration with long-time friend and Meander co-owner Fabian Geimer-Lorusso aka Jupiter), it marks a new beginning of ambient and score-like modern electronic music works as well as the continuation of his inspired intellectual-emotional approach to dance music. MEANDER 015-1EP

Part one of two. Top quality double vinyl Dewalta album on Meander. Unique, deep-sounding long techno journeys from another planet. This album is available in two separate parts. Part One comes in limited luxurious handmade screen-printed sleeves. Part Two comes with an inner sleeve and can be combined with Part One to build the full LP. Illumination is a record inspired by several physical phenomena and relationships: quantum mechanics, space, darkness and light. It works with subtle, clear kaleidoscopic musical textures and silhouettes triggered from an unknown place far out in the universe. Mastered and cut by Mike Grinser at Manmade Mastering, Berlin.

Part two of two. Top quality double vinyl Dewalta album on Meander. Unique, deep-sounding long techno journeys from another planet. This album is available in two separate parts. Part Two comes with an inner sleeve and can be combined with Part One to build the full LP. Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell experienced the Zen-like experience of seeing earth from space to a state of mind also known as the overview effect, or Savikalpa Samadhi. Darkness is absence of light. Life and energy is light. Light is invisible until it surfaces. In the zero point sleeps all potential energy. Mastered and cut by Mike Grinser at Manmade Mastering, Berlin.

The Thinkers EP was heavily inspired by essays about metaphysics. Metaphysics looks at the things behind ('meta') the physical appearance and its relationship to the non-physical. The story of philosophy and metaphysics seemed to me like emancipation from the 'perfect being' and over centuries, it seemed to evolve into the 'real,' more incarnated and away from 'belief' or religion. I simply wanted to express my interest in these non-direct musical things, from which I get a lot inspiration for writing music." --DeWalta

Label co-owner DeWalta returns back to Meander. These three tracks were carefully mastered and cut by Stefan Betke aka Pole at ~scape Mastering. "Keep On" comes with vocals by jazz-singer Judith Ahrends. Then the extended "Keep On (Dub Mix)" concentrates on pure grooves and will work its magic on a good soundsystem. "Sauvignon" wanders to higher emotional states with a warm and tricky house rhythm that makes you swing and shake. Pure atmosphere and presence.

Dewalta aka David Koch returns to Vakant with more popping, earnest house. "Move Yo" sits as close to late 1990s Baby Ford as one can get without a time machine and a personal guide to London's underground. "Nightshade" keeps the house-y goosebumps going with a drier and more direct approach. Cheeky bleeps and chunky bass balance dark, space-y vocals. "Angels Trumpet" features melodic elements that push and pull you in multiple directions, resulting in dancefloor catharsis.

"After recently releasing astonishing records on Vakant & Kalk Pets, DeWalta is hitting now even more dynamic and powerful springtime floors. Back on his motherlabel with great & unusual music, and we dare to say that it is our favorite release of him so far: 'Saluki' starts straight with a crafty bass driven smooth rocket and build it's self up alongside a guiding piano loop to reach very atmospheric frictions. Soft choir singing here and there, various dub sounds brushing in the space, bringing all sound aficionados into a beautiful ride. DeWalta's crispy rhythms are eventually fading out into melancholic and moving Detroitish strings, to complete this unique piece of music. 'Shagya' on the flipside is a self-developing carnival-esque odyssey. It's such a profound & delicious kickdrum, tightened with an extraordinary bass presence, it's simply irresistible not to groove happily on that one. All is enriched with polyphonic Balafon rhythms and hilarious African rooted chants -- this is the energetic tool for those special intimate moments. A perfect track when lust and familiarity is present within the crowd and we consider time as officially end."

KALKPETS 016EP

"DeWalta a.k.a. David Koch from Berlin is an extraordinary musician. Koch runs his own label Meander with two friends and studied classical jazz before he discovered electronic dance music as his personal calling. Since then he has been experimenting and researching in this ever-changing field, either on his own or together with other musicians and producers in Berlin such as Aquatic, Audio Werner and Pier Bucci. In collaboration with Aquatic he released his debut EP Nebelhorn on Kalk Pets in 2007. DeWalta's music is a wide-ranging mix of multi-cultural, pumped up sounds and selected influences from Detroit techno. A DeWalta track was included on Berlin's much loved Watergate club's 2008 compilation CD Watergate 01. As well as two releases last year on Meander, he recently also put out a 12" on the Berlin label Vakant. But his year of hot productions isn't over yet -- the next 3-track composition by DeWalta is coming here as Kalk Pets (Vol. 16). It's sure to be another fresh dance interlude ideal for the grey autumn and with warm greetings from the capital!"

"Like a proper immigrant family enjoying the life of culturally greener pastures, the Vakant family continues to grow in Berlin. Closely following the exponential trend of mergers and acquisitions in the Multi National Corpo Borg, Vakant Heavy Industries signs the third in a series of new talent to the team. Berlin's DeWalta a.k.a. David Koch, long time friend of Vakant, has completed assimilation into the freaky fold. David comes from that lofty echelon of actual musicians, having finished his degree in jazz and classically trained in piano and saxophone. He also runs his own label Meander with two friends. We don't know exactly where this 23-year-old youngin' came from but who cares, the tracks on his debut Vakant EP hit you on the bootay like a studded fraternity hazing paddle on hell week. There aren't even words we can find to describe the bass presence on this record."

"Alongside his fantastic debut release on the Karaoke Kalk sublabel Kalk Pets, DeWalta again provides us two stunning tracks, this time on his own label, Meander Music. While 'Eftive' is reduced to the basic elements of a drum combo with atmospheric soundscapes, 'Tesla' concentrates much more on dodgy, Moogish sound experiments. The bass line is tenderly drifting on both tracks and takes its time to rise up."
