Trading Places present a reissue of Fat Mattress II, originally released in 1970. Noel Redding made a big splash as bassist with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, but he was really a guitarist, having played with singer-songwriter Neil Landon in the Brunettes as a teenager. When Redding left the Experience, and Landon quit Engelbert Humperdinck's band, the pair formed Fat Mattress with Humperdinck's drummer, Eric Dillon, and bassist Jim Leverton, signing to Polydor for the self-titled debut album in 1969. Second album Fat Mattress II benefits from the presence of expressive keyboardist Mick Weaver, aka Wynder K Frogg, and on some tracks, Quartermass guitarist Steve Hammond, but Redding remains the major draw, as heard on the songs "Highway", "At The Ball" and "People". As with its predecessor, the album is based largely on the pleasantly-melodic shades of psychedelic folk rock, with a few rough rock edges along the way; this edition has a rare album outtake, "Hall Of Kings", and 1970 single B-side "Black Sheep Of The Family" as bonus tracks. The album emphasizes that Redding was a superb guitarist as well as a fine songwriter, giving a different perspective on his contributions in Jimi's band and beyond. Licensed from Cherry Red.

Trading Places present a reissue of Fat Matress's self-titled album, originally released in 1969. As bassist in the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Noel Redding made an indelible impression, but guitar was his chief instrument since the age of 17, when he backed Neil Landon in The Burnettes, and when Landon reconnected with Redding after a spell with Engelbert Humperdinck, Fat Mattress was born with Humperdinck's drummer, Eric Dillon, and bassist/keyboardist Jim Leverton. This indispensable debut was the only LP to feature Redding, the sound a pleasantly-melodic shade of psychedelic folk rock, with a few rough edges. Reproducing the original fold-out poster cover, this edition has four bonus tracks from the same sessions, two of which were issued on a 1969 single, the other two left in the can. 180 gram vinyl; in poster sleeve, faithfully reproducing the original version. Licensed from Cherry Red.

Formed by guitarist/vocalist Noel Redding while he was still playing bass in a little group called The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Fat Mattress released their debut in late 1969 on Polydor. Though Noel's more famous group was known for its hard edged psychedelic rock, Fat Mattress instead opted for the breezier side of things, with a distinct West Coast folk-rock bent. Drawing comparisons to Love, the Buffalo Springfield, and The Byrds, Fat Mattress is harmony-heavy and tuneful psychedelia. Though it was well received by critics at the time, sales were slow and Redding soon left the group. In the intervening years, though, Fat Mattress's fantastic debut has come to be known as a lost classic of psychedelic rock and this high-quality gatefold 180-gram LP reissue is a welcome relief from high-priced originals. Essential for fans of both Jimi Hendrix and psychedelic folk-rock.
