When pioneering no wave act Teenage Jesus and the Jerks inevitably split, vocalist/anti-guitarist Lydia Lunch launched a solo career that continues to the present with countless reinventions along the way. 2004 downtempo gem Smoke In The Shadows sees Lunch in west coast cinematic jazz mode, offset by hip-hop backbeats, Afro-Cuban rhythms and funk. Created by the team of Tommy Grenas and Len Del Rio of Anubian Lights, featuring guitarist Nels Cline and saxophonist Niels Van Hoorn from Legendary Pink Dots with special guest vocalist Carla Bozulich. It's the perfect foil for Lunch as Femme Fatale starring in her own B-movie, a film noir soundtrack that both threatens and seduces.

Recorded in Los Angeles in 1982, 13.13 exists as document to the pandemonium of specters and potential serial killers who twisted the California Dream into a waking nightmare as they snaked through the boulevards, back yards and basements of a sun stroked paradise turning into a blood-soaked inferno of fear, paranoia, panic and lust killings. Lush musical textures provided by members of seminal art punks The Weirdos -- Dix Denney, Cliff Martinez, and Greg Williams create a hypnotic backdrop to Lydia Lunch's evocative vocals and terrifying lyrics.

After the demise of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Lydia Lunch launched her solo career with Queen Of Siam, arguably her greatest LP. In true no wave style, the album is a mishmash of irritants, but her palette is far broader here, lurching from slow dirges, excessive feminist exhortations, and raucous personal purges to a touch of disco and lounge music exoticism, as conjured by Voidoids/Lou Reed guitarist Robert Quine, Contortions bassist Jack Ruby, and John Cale's drummer, Douglas Browne. Spirited, surprisingly broad and defiantly dissonant, Queen Of Siam's dense layers were designed to provoke and inflame; listen closely to fully decode.

LP version. Limited golden vinyl; 499 copies; Gatefold poster with lyrics. "Lydia Lunch has never concealed her influence for a certain kind of literature. With Marchesa she pays homage to the writing and stories of the Marquis De Sade who has always been a great inspiration for her. With this album Lydia transports us into a world of sadism, perversion and pleasure. Accompanying her in this literary voyage there is a background of dissonant sounds, distorted orchestration and ambient noises composed by Stefano Rossello (Bahntier, Ketvector) and by Lunch herself. A sensual and perverse homage to sadism, spirituality and fulfilment. It is certainly one of Lydia Lunch's most complete and shocking works. An absolute must!"

"In The Gun Is Loaded Lydia Lunch delivers a brutally frank manifesto in a journey through the heart of contemporary American darkness. Her poetic nihilism is set against a barrage of real-life street-action, scenery, news footage, and the deranged music of J.G. Thirlwell. Finally on DVD!" Region 0, NTSC format; running time: 45 minutes.

"Queen of Siam, Lydia Lunch's solo debut, was originally recorded in 1980. Featuring the noted talents of guitarist Robert Quine (Lou Reed, the Voidoids), multi-instrumentalist Pat Irwin (B-52's, Eight Eyed Spy), and the big band sound orchestra of Billy VerPlack (of Flintstones theme fame), the work proved to be a slap in the face to those critics awaiting a new Teenage Jesus-type of album from Lunch. Dirty, sophisticated, literary and raw, the album is today seen as the jewel in the crown of the no wave underground movement. Lunch created a sensual and hard-hitting musical landscape that startled even the most hardened of critics. After being out of print for years, Lunch's masterpiece returns with the original LP cover 'breasts of nails' pic for the first time on CD. Enhanced features on the disc include a live video performance of 'Knives in the Drain,' recorded live in London in 2004. Also included is a rare video of 'Gloomy Sunday' directed by Linda Di Franco, filmed in 1980."

ECHOISM 004EP

"For the next release on Echoism Recordings we have chosen to mix some of our favorite artists which we have worked with in the last few years and have influenced us greatly. Choosing a more underground and daring concept we've asked electronica wizards Solvent & Jori Hulkkonen to produce their interpretation of Lydia Lunch's 'Master Alchemist.' Lydia Lunch must be one of our favorite all time artists. An artist who defies every categorization through conquering new territories and gaining international recognition for the innovative quality of her work. With Echoism004 we have chosen two electronic artists with encyclopedentical understanding of electronic music and Lydia Lynch to interpret and produce the soundtrack for the hypnotic master alchemist. Solvent has created his own unique version of electro-pop: too elegant and sincere for the electroclash set, too complex and contemporary to sound like it was recorded in 1981, and too seeped in the time-honored traditions of melody, songwriting and hands-on synthesis to be lost in the overcrowded world of IDM. Along with some notable remixes for Soft Cell, Alter Ego, and Adult., Solvent has also contributed standout tracks to several influential electronica compilations in recent years, including Putting The Morr Back In Morrissey (Morr Music), Disco Nouveau (Ghostly International), and Misery Loves Company (Ersatz Audio). Zyntherius (born 1973) hails from the northern town of Kemi, Finland. Raised up around the Arctic circle, below freezing point and under the influence of a cocktail of synthpop and early electro, house and techno handily available from the Swedish radio, Jori quickly developed a taste, and more importantly, a passion for electronic music."

First CD issue of the long unavailable album and single originally on UK Fetish around the beginning of the 80s (plus unreleased material) by Lydia's most accessible musical ensemble. "8-Eyed Spy was developed by Lydia after the release of her landmark solo album, Queen Of Siam; the Spy were a sweaty, hot & heady concoction of unique rhythm section play (led by the legendary George Scott III) and frantic patchwork of sax/gtr blur. 8-Eyed Spy played a plethora of live gigs and were hugely popular, blending the visceral, the cerebral and the sexual: swamp-meets-slam-meets concrete slab."
