After their successful collaboration with Get Physical Music, Rework returns with another new dancefloor pleasure release called "Sun," and the following album Cue It Back. Sinister synth effected stabs and minimal cold female vocal contributions are still part of their iconic sound. Rework's minimalist beat and pulsing synthwork still captures an internal glamour combined with cold and Jane Birkin type vocal contributions by various female artists. With a sonic template of their earlier Playhouse tracks, Rework shows their love to club music again on their own label Exlove Records.

YKZ 003EP

180-gram vinyl. The Barcelona-based Yakazi label follows Ain't Made 4 U by Tripmastaz (YKZ 002EP, 2015) with a blistering EP by German trio Rework (Daniel Varga, Michael Kübler, Sascha Hedgehog), who follow releases on Visionquest, Playhouse, Items & Things, Meant, and more. Here, they continue to reinvent their fresh and funky reimaginings of new wave disco; with "Acid Control," they find themselves in even darker territory than before, making things much more intense. Venezuelan duo Fur Coat (Sergio Muñoz and Israel Sunshine) deliver an Aphex-esque remix of "Acid Control," pairing deep, dark, driving beats with a rolling groove.

ST 002EP

Seth Troxler, primarily recognized for his bond with Detroit and its varying strands of house and techno, founded his Soft Touch imprint in 2014 to seek out left-of-center cuts touching on "interstellar guitar, calypso disco and seductive techno tracks." The label's second release comes from the trio Rework (Visionquest, Playhouse). "Girl or a Boy" kicks things off with a dense wall of ducking pads before Sascha Hedgehog's vocals prowl over moody chord shifts. The title-track emits a Miami-tinged glow atop a walking bass pattern and a melancholic synth refrain before "Moon" sets hazy guitar licks rotating inside an aquatic casing.

ITEM 028EP
|
Forging a distinct sound that combines icy minimal structures with Euro-girl vocals that are as haunting as they are catchy, the five cuts that appear on Rework's Blackout EP provide their trademark Anglo-French funk antics and a healthy dose of dancefloor melancholy. The title-track grooves forward into stripped-down, post-minimal techno territory, while mocking lyrics ring out on "You're a Kid." When the chugging, Kraut-esque bass line of "Tape" kicks in, listeners are driven through a maze of twisted dancefloor mischief. Hedgehog reappears on stripped-down EP closer "Tame," rounding things in a distorted mess of new-wave sensitivity and sublime pop emotion.
