MINI 022EP
|
Jeff Samuel has been an activist on all the major labels of the past decade -- from 7th City to Trapez and Pokerflat. Minibar is thrilled about these two tracks he produced especially for the label. Sit back, switch the groove receptors on, and enjoy this insane EP.

Jeff Samuel is back on Trapez with some of the coolest tracks he has done in years. "Circle" is a heavy-duty, bassline-driven, bouncy rocker that could be right up there with Claude Von Stroke's house numbers. "Funk Taxi" starts out sick but eventually changes direction, developing into a cool, deep chord-driven house track. "Lip Service" features some funky disco grooves and a lot of understatement. It's one of those songs that can go on forever.

"Jeff Samuel is a name that all of you will know. After years of quality releases on more labels that you can shake a stick at, including Pokerflat, Trapez, 7th City, Morris Audio, Frankie, and of course, right here on Contexterrior. Now the American is back to use once again after a long gap. In that time many things in the world have changed, so many that we can barely list them all. Most notably, there are several new flavors of ice cream, and videogames are starting to look a little better. Unfortunately, Bush is still president. Yes, time to crack open that ice cream."

After a break and several releases on other labels such as Frankie, Jeff Samuel presents Chloe's Brain. The title track is a cool nightmare of small ghosts coming alive, and definitely a weird piece of funk that works well with other Trapez releases. "The Times" on the flipside seems heavier, with a relentless, strong but still quirky production.

"Jeff Samuel is back on Frankie Rec with a surprising 3 tracker EP titled Gurd Em EP. On the A-side, the eponymous track creates an original weird atmosphere mixing hypnotic sounds and bass voices with the groovy bass line and incisive drums. On the B-side, B1.: 'Dementia' is a brilliant minimal tech house piece full of subtle bleeps and mental sweet melodies with Jeff's typical sense of groove and on B2.: 'Spic and Span' more funky is full of quirky sounds & groovy bass line. Ingredients of a freaky tune!"

Jeff Samuel has been constantly building his profile as a DJ, producer and remixer over the last few years and released his debut album on Trapez in 2006. Fire is a great, snappy and propellent tune with some squeaking synths and a stomping beat. The first remix is by Claude VonStroke, who adds more dirt and distortion, while St. Sebastian focuses on squeaky tunes and rebuilds the track with a messy break in the middle. An awesome package that will set the dancefloors on fire.

Trapez is proud to present the re-release of Jeff Samuel's deleted minimal classic, "Lost." The track was originally produced in 2000 and released in 2001 by mysterious NYC label Remains with no artist or title information. Discovered years later, the record became a secret weapon of Hawtin, Villalobos, Daniel Bell, Sammy Dee, Jeff Milligan and many more. Created with only 6 samples and 1 directX reverb effect, "Lost" is a blueprint not only for the current minimal techno sound, but for "in the box" techno produced entirely via computer. Produced in the days before VSTI's and Ableton Live, this re-release reconfirms Samuel's place as a pioneer of software-based dance music production.

One-sided 12". "I Think They Are Trying To Say Something" was not released on Jeff Samuel's Step LP, but as it gained a great reputation in Jeff Samuel's DJ sets, Trapez now releases it in a specially-mastered vinyl version. This epic track with its large amount of delays and effects creates a magic, smooth and gentle feeling. This is very unique and shows Jeff's ambition to extend the genre of minimal techno, to one with more emotion and soul. As Geoff Robert says of the track, "'I Think They Are Trying To Say Something' is an evocative bit of tech-house combining ethereal pads and some brilliant use of flange & delay ... In a way, you could call Jeff Samuel the Frank Zappa of electronica, with glimpses of sheer musical intelligence hiding around every bizarre corner."

Trapez is happy to present Jeff Samuel's long-awaited first artist album entitled Step. After seven years of making music, "the 8-bit Tetris wizard" Jeff Samuel has produced a true classic LP, with tracks that rock the floor as well as tracks that are deep and melodic, sometimes even epic. The album has a strong songwriting link, although the music is still stripped down and jacking. Step was created during the spring of 2006, and Samuel continues in the melodic direction of his most recent releases on Trapez and Trapez Ltd, Bork and Endpoint. These tracks were conceived as part of a dancefloor album, but the extra steps and melodic sophistication makes especially the CD version (containing extra tracks) one which can be listened to in sequence. The title itself has many meanings: at its core, a step is an object to get from one level to another. We can see that Jeff has accomplished this on the closing track of the CD "I Think They Are Trying To Say Something," which uses a melody that evolves over the course of nine minutes, never repeating itself. His production elements have also been stepped up, including the use of strings on some tracks and even a short journey into broken beats on "Month 2 Month," both an ode to Detroit and to the struggle of living in the USA as a techno artist. Jeff's recent DJ sets have already been setting dance floors ablaze with album tracks like "Off The Mark" and "You Will Never Know," both featuring Samuel's trademark basslines and almost song-like hooks. With Step, Samuel consciously wanted to take his melodies as far as he could. While they have always been present in early works such as "Double Yum," "Knob" and "Fcote," they were never as outward and naked as on this LP. Could this album be his final statement in this direction? Maybe we will find out in another seven years.

"It has been a while since Jeff has released any records. So we are happy he decided to return with a Trapez release featuring new tracks of his. The comeback of Jeff Samuel is packaged in a brand new sound design of strong punchy crispiness. But his swinging cool, vibrant, tracky rhythms he is known for are also essentials of his new productions. The bass is as strong as on his last EP Endpoint on Trapez Ltd. but much more hi-tech. The new tracks keep a coolness which stays true to Jeff's unique handwriting. 'Bork' starts as a bouncy track, happy natured before it turns bass-y, dark and mighty, as if temperature had dropped below zero! The flip-side 'Gonadotrpin' is a deeper less flippant track, going stronger in the direction of his forerunner 12"s on Trapez, more fragile-sexy-subtle and groovy as hell!"

"Yes, the man is hot. And through his fabulous 3 EPs on Trapez the worlds techno alliance can even more appreciate the nice work of this American programmer. On this new 12" we find two long cuts, stripped down as usual, swinging and deadly funky. This man uses so few elements it is unbelievable. Melodic passages arise and you will witness, melodies do not have to sound the same."

KARLOFF 003EP

"He's been a guiding light in dark times for quite a while now: Jeff Samuel, our man for special purposes. His graceful minimal styles already overwhelmed the people at Trapez, 7th City, Lo-Fi Stereo and Pokerflat Recordings, but now he's at it for more: 'Throatwobbler Mangrove' on Karloff combines skilled functionality and poetic catchiness to create some fresh, cutting-edge music, that will teach greedy floors how to move right. You will see: life at night is hard, and it's always useful to have a powerful friend At your side. Why not Jeff?"
