The second outing of Johannes Volk for Running Back picks up, where Extra Dimensions left listeners: traditional techno components, an inclination for melodies, '80s electro(nic) pop and aesthesia for ecstasy. Something for everyone's taste and nothing tacky. Lightweave is like the conversation that Giorgio Moroder and Wolfgang Voigt never had. With a power plant of a bass line that's pretty much all you need. The direct connection to the EPs artwork is "Cubistic Pathway." Painted with acryl on canvas as a birthday present, it's like the title tracks little and playful brother and a homage to 16bit platform games like Turrican or Contra. "Fragments of Moments" is the sort of piano-not-piano-house stomper that classic techno DJs love, while "Sense of Wonder" is one of those songs without vocals that appeals to '80s-kids and their offspring. Last but not least, "Emotional Message" and its hypodermic breakbeat dates back to 2011, wears the heart on the sleeve, and screams tearjerker, bear hug or elevation. If you can't get enough of that, there are three digital bonus tracks, that mix, re-mix and fixate the topics you just read about. Volk's populi!

MOC 020EP

After contributing with a remix in 2018, Made Of Concrete invite Johannes Volk for a full-length artist release. A scene veteran, Volk is known for his releases on Jeff Mills' Axis Records, Patrice Scott's Sistrum, or Steffi's Dolly imprint or for his live appearances in staple clubs Berghain, Tresor, Panorama Bar, Golden Pudel, or Corsica Studios to name a few. Opener "Soldered Minds" introduces a dense, energy-filled dynamic that's both impactful and intriguing. Label chiefs Rebar give the track a "Hum" remix treatment, adding layers of sizzle and flow that transform it into an afterhours-ready alternative. Undulating basslines stand the base of "Magma In Slo-mo", a track that offers a solid anchor and great tool for the dancefloor. The haunting, glitch-laden "Asphalt Flowers" brings unpredictability with its jittery, uneasy atmosphere that, if played at the right time, is the perfect trigger for a descent into dance delirium.

COR 161EP
|
Johannes Volk's second release on Cocoon Recordings continues his tonal references to the origins of techno in a highly unique style. "Nevergreen", with its driving sequencer synth, is a furious and mechanical workout with a harsh industrial vibe and unbelievable string textures will shake the dancefloor to its foundations. On "Awareness", Volk conjures up an unforgettably romantic soundscape without sacrificing any energy. After a solid minute, the foggy horizon opens up to one of those rare yet incredibly valuable moments, when you suddenly want to embrace the whole world from inside the club.

COR 152EP

There are no dreamy minimal sounds or deep house trips on Johannes Volk's Tears And Walls, instead you'll find headstrong techno pumping out of the speakers. "Tears And Walls" drives forward relentlessly with its meaty kick and metallic open hi-hats setting the pace. "A Little Story About Time And Space" follows in its footsteps although the mood here is notably more Detroit, reminiscent of productions on cult labels like Red Planet, Metroplex, or the Axis Records sound. Volk layers the track with more prominent harmonies and hypnotic arpeggios, giving it a subtle yet highly effective trance touch.

TOKEN 073EP
|
Johannes Volk goes above and beyond with his first Token offering, the four-track EP Designing Evolution. The title track rushes in with meandering, staccato synth-work while the gradually opening hi-hat and subsequent ride advance frenetically overhead. "Escapism" is sparse and roomy. With more melodic wandering, grand swells accompany a pleasant, digressive bell, forced ahead with functional percussion. The subdued lead of "Cosmic Clockwork" takes you straight to 1995 Detroit and expands as the track shuffles onto full power. "Sleeping On A Razor Blade" is a bouncy, unconventional contribution with an off-kilter kick pattern and jazzy accents.

PLTR 014EP
|
Johannes Volk presents his debut Asteroid Riding EP. On the A-Side Volk blows the whistle of the EP's title "Asteroid Riding" with funky chords accompanied by a wide deep bassline, short samples and classic percussions and a cropped stomping kick-drum. On the B-Side "Earthbound" pounds with a broad hollow kick, arpeggiated synths, alerting sounds and a harmonically settled type of string-line that eases the element's diversity like the blue planet's gravity. Within the tracks that have been built to transport the feel of time and space, Johannes Volk again pushes himself on the cutting edge of electronic music.

SNAP 007EP
|
"As Snapshot's catalogue grows, so too does the quality. The modest label hits us with five new tracks by Johannes Volk with a heavy Detroit minimal feel, instantly reminding us of vintage Robert Hood productions built of only the bare essential elements required to move ones' body. Johannes is currently pounding the floors across Europe with his live sets and has released on labels such as Jeff Mills' 6277 imprint (an Axis sub label) & Gerd's Life World Records."
