CLR 106EP
|
For the first CLR release of 2023, Chris Liebing drops a heavy-hitting EP for his own imprint, the two-track Love Those Who Fight With Passion And Faith EP. Leading the release, "For Those Who Fight" combines sub-rattling kicks and siren-esque bleeps with rousing vocal samples and shimmering percussion for a warehouse-filling club cut. "With Passion And Faith" keeps the energy levels high with dubbed-out FX, twisted atmospherics and sizzling drum machines. While 2022 was dominated by Liebing's Another Day LP and remix version, "Another Night", for Daniel Miller's Mute, 2023 will see Liebing in full-on singles mode with some notable collaborations to come. Liebing's iconic CLR imprint started in 1999 and returned in 2021 after a five-year hiatus. Now titled Create Learn Repeat, CLR reemerged in the techno underground with releases from Liebing himself, followed by newcomer Frankie Bromley, upstarts Hertz Collision & Gene Richards Jr, DEAS, Truncate, Drumcell, and techno legend Luke Slater.

In 2013 Drumcell debut his first full length album Sleep Complex on CLR (CLR 013CD/LP). Around the time of the album release Drumcell invited three of his close label mates Luis Flores aka Truncate and Raíz from Droid and Lucy from Stroboscopic Artefacts to create their own interpretations of his music. The unreleased tracks were constant dance floor tracks used within the teams DJ sets and it's about time to release these tracks to the public.

Following his profound and forward-thinking 2015 album Depth Charged (CLR 014CD/LP), Terence Fixmer returns with Depth Charged Remixes featuring Ostgut Ton's Answer Code Request and UK underground techno hero Steve Bicknell. "Elevation," originally the final track of the album, emotional and reflective, is kicked up a notch by ACR's Patrick Gräser by adding ponderous drum patterns making it perfect for the floor. Conversely, Steve Bicknell takes on "Unforeseen." With its fast-paced rolling bass, it is now put into top gear, shivering with feverish reverberations. Fixmer's own live versions, which have energetically filled dancefloors throughout his tour, complement each variation.

ROD's second EP on CLR following 2012's HGB/DTC (CLR 059EP) features two tracks that displays a style and approach unprecedented in his career. "HKH" touches the more peak-time side of things, but by infusing some deep pads it creates a slightly more Detroit edge overall. "Usually, I try to build my tracks around the minimum sounds possible, but in this case all these lead sounds just made sense to me," says ROD. "GHT" sees ROD experimenting with a late, trippy night and just flowing. "This might be one of the weirdest tracks I have made so far."

Edit Select delivers two excellent tracks for CLR. Lights-off, heads-down action all the way, these are repetitive techno tracks perfectly constructed for the floor. A less-is-more aesthetic is the main focus, as one would expect from Tony, but "Continuation Part 1" and "Continuation Part 2" are perhaps his most effective tracks to date. Two of Chris Liebing's most played tracks of 2015.

Rebekah follows her CLR debut, the 2013 Cycles EP (CLR 067EP), with Distant, veering toward the deeper side of her repertoire, with analog synths and sequencers. On "Distant," she opts for a more broken beat and uses a vast palette to create a forward-moving soundscape that opens up with darker pads. "Distant Memory" shapes sounds from "Distant" into a down-tempo, slightly experimental piece that's also warm and inviting. "Synchronicity" is a full-on techno groove workout, featuring Rebekah's signature kicks with an elegance that complements the "Distant" pieces. Sterac's remix of "Distant" is a groovy exploration; modern techno at its best.

"Anonymous" has been a regular tune in Chris Liebing's sets across the world since summer 2014. Rebekah included the track on her 2014 Mind Sets compilation on CLR. "Anonymous" is a subtle, groove-driven techno tune designed for the dancefloor. On the flipside, Emerson takes us on a cinematic journey with "Too Many People Talking (Not Enough Information)," a mesmerizing ambient tune that invites us to get into Emerson's universe.

Chicago-born and -bred DJ, producer, teacher, and brother of the humble Joseph Manumaleuna aka DJ Hyperactive covers a wide spectrum of sonic and artistic possibilities, from the minimalist, bouncy original mix of "Venus," elegantly playing with a mixture of uplifting and dark vibes; to the extremely reduced and highly effective Truncate remix; the relentless, almost epic Ciren mix; and the percussive, hypnotic remix by DJ Hyperactive himself. Each version can be appropriate for a different situation, but in the end they are all aiming for the same goal: to create an absorbing soundtrack for unifying experiences on the dance floor.

Drumcell has put together an excellent package of three heavyweight remixes of "Departing Comfort," a track from his acclaimed 2013 debut full-length Sleep Complex (CLR 013CD/LP). Planetary Assault Systems' remix is elegantly driving, straightforward, deep techno. Orphx's remix remains faithful to the broken-beat structure of the original and creates a suspenseful atmosphere with distorted rhythms and acidic sequences. Material Object's remix is characterized by a big, hypnotic bassline, slowly building with a variety of well-chosen rhythmic elements and textures.

Double LP version. French producer and live performer Terence Fixmer continues to evolve as an artist while maintaining his influential stance in international techno culture. Following his 2010 album Comedy of Menace (EDLX 010CD), his continuous evolution has led him to produce his most introspective album yet. With this ten-piece composition, Fixmer is able to tell a story from start to finish, with powerful, deep, dark, pulsating tones that are essential to his musical approach. Depth Charged is a complete concept, as Fixmer's track arrangement takes the audience through various emotions illustrating how there is more to darkness than the dancefloor. Beginning with a slow but heavy bassline, "Ellipse" acts as a perfect introduction, setting the attitude for the album. "Fleeting Beauty" brings us fluttering chords amidst a serpentine drone, while the rolling bass of "Unforeseen" sends the listener into a trancelike state. "Purity" distracts the listener with its raw analog warmth filled with extraterrestrial energy. "Inside of Me," selected by Marcel Dettmann for his 2014 Fabric 77 mix (FABRIC 153CD), and "Outside of Me" are both very dark tracks, filled with atmospheric suspense and quaking rhythms. "Beyond" is a pure exemplar of Fixmer's signature style with an infectious progression sending anyone to the dancefloor as "Pallid Light" follows its footsteps filling a bit more radiance into a modern techno sound. "Thoughts" shows another emotion of the album with deeper, dub-like sonorities leading to the final track. Concluding the odyssey is "Elevation," the most melodic track on the album. Beautifully deep, undulating, and atmospheric, it is a breath of fresh air that brings the listener back to reality. Raf Simons chose this track to accompany the showcase of his works for Dior at the 2014 CFDA Awards. With its profound, mystifying tones that rise and fall, Depth Charged is the epitome of Fixmer's unique expression.

Monoloc's latest effort offers a challenging mixture of various electronic music genres. Apart from the original version and the Monoloc edit which occupy the A-side, two highly-respected producers have contributed remixes to this project, making it an impressive assembly of potential A-sides. Monoloc's original version underlines the capacity of the Berlin-based producer to create unorthodox, suspenseful techno with a very personal handwriting. The remixes by Roman Lindau and Rødhåd turn this release into one of the most diversified CLR releases, ever. While Roman Lindau takes a house-oriented direction, Rødhåd explores the dark side of Monoloc's composition and delivers a haunting techno version.

Rebekah delivers the third and last part of CLR's new format. Once more, Rebekah has chosen a mixture of tracks by fellow CLR players and other colleagues she admires for their cutting-edge, quality production style. Brian Sanhaji contributed "Gyre," a truly mesmerizing, acidic journey. "Berkel" was produced by Dualit and is characterized by a comparatively laid-back vibe. The B-side contains two more tracks by Bas Mooy and by Rebekah herself. Bas Mooy's "Exile" is another good example of minimalistic, driving and hypnotic techno, while Rebekah manifests with "Zero Point," straight-forward, full on, banging techno with heaps of positive energy.

Tommy Four Seven is back on CLR with another challenging release, titled OX. Featuring two original versions and a remix by Oscar Mulero, one of Spain's most tireless and trendsetting techno ambassadors. The originals of "OX 1" and "OX 2" seem to equally satisfy his artistic standards as much as the needs of the dancing crowd. Loads of groove and dark, absorbing atmospheres go hand-in-hand, creating his much-appreciated modern techno sound. Oscar Mulero takes the opportunity to deliver an irresistibly driving take on "OX 1," proving once more his qualities and significance as a producer.

CLR is back with an exciting EP by Monoloc. For more than a decade, Monoloc has been honing his skills in the studio and has at all times been a faithful ambassador for the complete abolition of genre-boundaries. His imaginative beat and sound-programming, as well as the ability to create dynamic and sometimes surprising arrangements, are qualities he shares with the Swedish duo Skudge who took on the duty to remix this outstanding track. Their unique remix does not only express their well-known, tasteful approach, but also their unpredictability and stylistic independence. The EP also includes a brand-new version by the man himself. While the mind-bending sound of his debut album Drift works for all kinds of occasions, the "Monoloc Edit" of "Try" almost demands to be played out loud on massive club speakers. But even in his more dancefloor-oriented productions, there is always a comforting warmth about Monoloc's sound.
