"Matteo Spedicati (Leftout/Mindshake) returns for his second release on Gumption, backed up by a superb late night excursion from Mark Henning (Clever/Trapez/Foundsound/etc). Both versions of 'Il Fantasma di Hobanubi' have been ripping up selected dancefloors over the summer and if you're familiar with either of these guys' sounds then you'll know exactly why. On the dog side, Mark Henning rethinks the track into a completely different dimension, choosing to strip it down before rebuilding it with layer upon layer of subliminal fx, crisp percussion sequences and phat, funked-up sub basslines. Dark, eerie but supremely cool -- the pulsing groove is carried forward by all manner of clicks, cuts and stuttering hi-hat sequences before falling away amid a wash of white noise and ghostly echoes that bring on the type of rush that will cause collective mayhem between the speaker stacks. Over on the flip, Matteo's original version is a hi-octane adventure that slowly emerges from a dense forest of tripped-out bleeps and jagged percussion."

"Holger Brauns joins the party with a couple of killer cuts from two of his collaborative projects. On the 'Dog Side,' Pecklar & Brauns have created a 15-minute epic -- a collision of post-minimal neo-trance -- that rides a wave of emotion from beginning to end. 'The Salvation' is a piece of music that lifts you up above the clouds and transports you back to any number of long forgotten situations... from Berlin to Ibiza, from Glastonbury to Koh Phangan. From the deep, synthetic heartbeat that ushers the track in to the lush multi-layered arrangement that defines the breakdown, it slowly builds through a combination of fractured hi-hat sequences, ground shaking beats and a pulsing 6/8 hookline that adds some bite to the proceedings. 'The Salvation' is a perfectly weighted track and the time it takes to peak and then unravel, allows the main motif to develop through several contrasting phases, each accompanied by a new, shifting landscape. Fluctuating between darkness and light, it radiates energy and will surely accompany a few sunrises over the coming months. Over on the flip, 'The Remission' has its feet rooted firmly to the ground. Earthed by a bassline that snakes its way lazily through the scratchy undergrowth, Holger Brauns and Haktan O'Nal add a bit of swagger to the release with this raw, funk fueled groove. Full of twisted percussion fills and a mad, squawking main riff that pecks into your subconscious. It's designed to get the dancefloor shaking and provides the perfect foil to the high drama on the other side."

"Gumption retrieves two more smoldering cuts from the blast furnace. 'AAcid Code 8' is the result of a spontaneous studio session that took place after a long night behind the decks and from the moment the bassline emerges from a dense thicket of white noise the pair make their intentions clear. With expertly-crafted sequences punctuated by dramatic crescendos and distinctive mood changes, 'AAcid Code 8' is a melting pot of styles and influences that somehow manage to coexist, creating a rich montage of sounds and textures. Tarantula Continuum is an altogether different experience. Rolled by Nev before being thoroughly smoked in Casio's Bergheim studio, it's a dense, multi-layered monolith with a ring shifting bassline suspended in a delicate web of glitchy delays, filtered efx and scratchy melodies."

"'Bouzouki Several' is one of the most distinctive sounding tracks you will hear this winter and comes courtesy of newcomer Alex Tsiridis. Based around the resonating tones of a traditional Greek bouzouki the track evolves irresistibly, slowly overwhelming the listener who is caught somewhere between the pumping linear groove of the rhythm section and the intense dynamics of the bouzouki samples. The attention to detail is impressive, as are the layers of sound that Tsiridis builds up using his own vocal efx. The crunchy textures, crackles and pops are all self-generated adding further freakiness to the mayhem. Taut as an archer's bow, the tension gradually builds towards a real head fuck of a breakdown -- the psychedelics kick in, time spins out sideways and the bouzouki riff goes into digital meltdown. There's no letting up on the flip side, either, as the monolithic 'Ballpoint' pushes the boat out even further. Reminiscent of The Emperor Machine, the minimal 4/4 drum pattern is slowly enveloped in a wash of shimmering percussion, distorted synth lines, retro basslines and trademark vocal efx."

"Matteo Spedicati is another new talent from Cagliari who has been patiently honing his skills over the past couple of years and the results have been well worth waiting for. 'Weekend at Pisano's' and 'Mostrami il Dragone' are two quality cuts, heavy on both groove and melody that represent an extremely assured debut by this skillful young DJ and producer. 'Weekend at Pisano's,' as the name suggests, snakes its way through the fragmented memories of a lost 48 hours. It's a slow, chugging, funked-up track with a rolling bass and throbbing groove that provide some serious transport for the glitchy, jangling efx, the warped bleeps and crazy hookline that rises and falls as the arrangement unfolds over a full ten minutes. The flipside is equally intricate in its construction, with particular attention to detail paid to the peripheral efx and rhythms that circle the main theme. 'Mostrami il Dragone' is a tenser, darker melodic techno track, full of rich sounds and reverberating breakdowns. Similar in style to that pioneered by label and soulmate Renato Figoli on tracks like 'Ocho al Puma' and 'Let Fernando In,' Matteo continues the development of this distinctive Sardinian sound they have created -- full of mischief and intrigue, these two tunes won't fail to get the crowd moving."

"Long before he began dabbling in electronic music, Renato Figoli fought his way to the title of Sardinian Fencing champion dispatching opponents at will, through a combination of dead-eye accuracy and razor sharp reflexes. Those same precision movements are on display again in his latest offering, Serotonin Smile. Deeper and darker than last November's bombs Ocho al Puma and E'arrivato L'arrotino, Serotonin Smile plays a seductive game of cat and mouse with the dance floor, patiently building from the first booming kick drum to its awesome conclusion, unleashing wave after wave of infectious bleeps, beats and basslines in the process. Subtle distortion FX and perfectly crafted delays add further dimensions to a unique track that will turn up the heat this summer. Over on the flip side, Gumption welcomes Mathias Schaffhäuser as its first special guest remixer, and the man behind Ware Records is on top form, adding some Colognial swing and reworking the track into a real burner. Whereas the original unfolds slowly, the remix not only hits the floor running but is jam packed with intricate new rhythms, dirty analogue basses and a long twisted breakdown that's worth the entrance fee alone."

"Two scintillating slabs of sonic sorcery from Eddie Zarook and Casio Casino to fuel the engines of the Gumption express and help us push on into the night... Anyone who picked up last year's 'double whammy' Halluzengenic/The Gap will know what these guys are all about -- tough, uncompromising grooves coupled with dexterity and original thought. First up, '6ft Under' is a blurry-eyed musical vision which perfectly captures that moment during the night when people start to go missing in action. Subtle atmospheric layers, phasing percussion loops, subliminal vocal samples and a clunking drum-pattern initially disoriented before giving way to a killer bass riff that will catapult any dancefloor worth its salt towards nirvana. It's a deep, psychedelic experience -- rich in both texture and colour -- that abandons the rather staid, formulaic conventions of many modern productions in favour of a free-flowing, open arrangement scoring highly on both style and content in the process."

"What better way to start the New Year than with a fresh new artist -- London-based producer and DJ Ed Davenport. Ed's been making an impact on the UK 'minimal' scene for a while now and these two tracks should go a long way towards cementing his reputation as one of the more promising emerging producers around. Whereas Gumption 001 was all about slowly turning up the pressure before driving the dance floor to distraction, Ed adopts a different yet equally effective approach on Gumption 002, dropping the tempo, working the space behind the grooves and utilizing his arrangement skills to deliver two emotionally contrasting rides. In fact on 'Diminuendo,' he unravels the track so completely he almost flatlines, stripping away the layers until all that remains is the pulsing bass line that works so effectively as the central focus of the track (don't you just love a good breakdown?). It's a dark, bass heavy journey full of intricate percussive effects and subliminal rushes. Urgent yet sparse, it offers the DJ maximum flexibility both as an individual track (like a film that needs several viewings to fully appreciate the complex narrative) and as a mixing tool. At nearly ten minutes there are enough twists and turns, peaks and troughs, shifts and shakes to really get your hands dirty with this one. The flipside contains 'Yanderling' and highlights Ed's musical sensibilities. It's a long, drifting, mellow groove full of chugging percussion with a timeless hook line that ebbs and flows throughout. Reminiscent of Model 500, Eddie 'Flashin' Fowlkes, even early Villalobos, it's one of those tracks that needs to be heard at the end of a dark night just as the sun breaks out from behind the clouds to warm your soul."

"For Gumption 001, Renato is operating left of centre, somewhere between the realms of house and techno. Taking the best of both worlds, he cooks up a real storm through a skillful combination of patient build-ups, funky rolling basslines, splintered percussion loops and dramatic breakdowns. Out of a long, snaking intro the 'Ocho La Puma' suddenly takes off with an urgent, driving bassline followed by a hypnotic synth riff that twists and turns before slowly morphing into a cavernous breakdown of epic proportions. 'E'arrivato L'arrotino' (The Knives Arrive) is equally twisted and infectious. Renato is on top form with his first two Gumption trax, moving away from the more thoughtful, minimal grooves he's been producing for LoFi into peak time territory."
