For the first time in more than a decade, Paul St. Hilaire (AKA Tikiman) presents a solo album -- 100% Tiki. Over his 30-plus year career, St. Hilaire has become one of dance music's quietly legendary figures. Born and raised in Dominica, he moved to Berlin in 1994 and has lent both his voice and his musicianship to some of the most iconic electronic music from the German capital -- and beyond. Renowned for his collaborations with Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus (AKA Rhythm & Sound), he has also appeared on records with Deadbeat, Rhauder, Larry Heard aka Mr. Fingers and Stereotyp (G-Stone Recordings), amongst others. However, few know the extent of St. Hilaire's compositional and technical mastery. From his home studio in Kreuzberg, which includes an extensive collection of vintage hardware, self-built instruments and notebooks scribbled with endless lyrics, he has created a vast archive of material spanning ambient dub, avant-jazz, lush techno, and lovers rock. Tikiman Vol. 1 is a heady, downtempo tour de force of patois metaphors on education, displacement, and personal vs. global histories, as is evident on slippy album opener "Bedroom In My Bag": "Mister, mister / Where are you going? / I'm heading for a faraway land / What are you having in the bag in your hand? / Help us to understand / He said, I've got my bedroom in my bag." Overall, the album's lyrics reflect on life between Berlin and Dominica, specifically St. Hilaire's hometown of Grand Bay, where he has worked with various musicians famous for the island's different genres of carnival music. St. Hilaire himself always favored the island's more "discrete" music, developing a sonic synergy between two different geographical strains of groove and minimalism, and combining them with foundational Caribbean mixing techniques, which provide the basis for his songwriting and distinct baritone. Tikiman Vol. 1 offers a rare insight into St. Hilaire's complex artistry, from the eyes-down grooves of "Little Way" and the guitar-heavy digi dancehall experiment "Keep Safe," to the subtle hypnosis of "Ten To One" and the softly crashing synth waves of closer "Three And A Half," evoking not only beaches but also coasts and borders. It's a fitting expression of both the breadth of St. Hilaire's work, as well as his history as one of the few black, Berlin-based artists who, despite remaining largely overlooked, has influenced the city's electronic music culture since its beginnings. TM404 and Echologist (aka Andreas Tilliander and Brendon Moeller) return to Kynant Records with their second collaboration, this time including a remix from another standout dub techno artist, VRIL. The Infiltrated EP has two boomy, 4x4 rollers on the A side. On the B side, VRIL's broken-beat, ethereal version on the is followed by the title-track, a twisted stream of grainy modulations.

Japanese sound sculptors Steven Porter (aka Katsunori Sawa and Yuji Kondo) sign two striking productions to Kynant, with a pair of remixes completing the Reservoir EP. "A Need For Distance" is abrasive and hard-hitting but not without moments of melody. Fellow Japanese purveyor of tripped-out techno Iori mines a lean, highly-effective groove on the remix. "Romance Tip" takes a slower, endlessly-detailed approach with sharp percussion and mind-bending atmospherics; Max Durante, who recently released his debut LP on Kynant (KYN 008LP), contributes a broken-beat workout to finish the record. Mastering by Giuseppe Tillieci, aka Neel.

Max Durante's first LP in a 30-year career, The Experiment, is a new, left-field direction for an artist whose history traces from the birth of techno, through IDM, industrial, and electro. Spread over four sides of vinyl, The Experiment consists of beatless pieces (which reveal another character when slowed to 33RPM), broken-beat techno, and straight-up dancefloor trips. The LP opens with eight minutes of full immersion in the eternally looped beat of "EX-P01". It clears the palette for the diverse yet distinctive, ambient-leaning tracks which make up the first 12". On the C side, Durante's focus is on the dancefloor, with hard-hitting, tense techno tracks made in collaboration with his peers from the early Roman scene, acclaimed duo Retina.it and Fabrizio D'Arcangelo, half of Rephlex act D'Arcangelo. On the final side, "EX-P07" is trademark Durante in the style of Black Light (KYN 001EP, 2015) or his recent records for Sonic Groove, before an ambient outro ends the experiment. The record was mastered by one of Rome's following generation of techno artists, Giuseppe Tillieci aka Neel. 140 gram vinyl.

TM404 and Echologist (aka Andreas Tilliander and Brendon Moeller) collaborate for the first time on Bass Desires EP. Two leading artists in dub techno and ambient electronics produce four cuts between their studios in New York and Stockholm, with results sitting in between the oscillations of Echologist's previous Kynant release (KYN 005EP, 2016) and the slo-mo, Roland jams TM404 specializes in. The A side tracks are direct, with hard-hitting drums, soaring atmospherics, and boom-y reverb. Flip over and the record spaces out into cavernous bass vibrations; first the subterranean "Odyssey" and then the modular twists of the title track.

Veteran dub techno producer Brendon Moeller dons his Echologist alias on The Flame EP. The title track is the most experimental, opening the record with tripped-out machine melodies and off-beat drum hits. "Kavorka" follows in the same vein but is more dancefloor focused. Its arps build up the tension until a thick 303 line takes things to a tipping point and eventual release. "Dirtbox" is a fast-paced take on warehouse techno and the deep, atmospheric cut "Candy Mountain" finishes the record in Moeller's signature style. Mastered by Neel. 180 gram vinyl. Packaged in a house sleeve. Artwork by Christopher Honeywell.

Melbourne-based Vohkinne joins Kynant with Wind Shadows EP. Its title track is a grinding techno trip with stop-start drums to switch up the rhythm in a room. The two B-side cuts are straighter dancefloor fare. The first, "Watching Over Us", is a thick and heavy, hypnotizing 4x4 track. "The Heretic" is more dynamic and unpredictable. Mastered by Neel (EnissLab Studio, Rome). Artwork designed by Christopher Honeywell. Pressed on 180g, 12" vinyl at Optimal Media, Germany. Packaged in a house sleeve.

Tensal is a solo project of Héctor Sandoval, a leading Spanish techno artist with an accomplished discography begun in the mid-'90s, primarily as half of Exium. "Inertia 1" rolls out with an unusual, off-kilter groove, while hi-hats and sliding sub notes grow in intensity to the end. "Inertia 2" and "Inertia 3" are the peak-time cuts; the first is all synth bleeps and pumping low-end, the second more hyperactive with its flurry of tightly wound bass and steely percussion. 180-gram 12" in house sleeve. Mastered by Neel at EnissLab, Rome. Pressed at Optimal Media, Germany. All artwork designed by Christopher Honeywell.

180-gram vinyl. Limited edition of 275. The Desert Island EP by Black Sand (Max Durante (KYN 001EP, 2015) and his fellow Italian DJ Datch) begins with the restrained "Abyss" and "Black Sea," building a groove out of tense layers of underwater atmosphere and a tough low-end. The B-Side pushes the sound harder; the creeping drone of "Dead Sea" is tailored for DJs to gradually build a room's energy, while "High Tide" is peak-time material noticeably inspired by the '90s. Mastered by Neel at EnissLab, Rome; pressed at Optimal Media, Germany. Packaged in a house sleeve. All artwork designed by Christopher Honeywell.

180-gram vinyl. Techno veteran Max Durante has been active since the late '80s and is regarded as one of the pioneers of Italian techno and electro. Black Light is a four-track EP of deep, physical, avant-garde techno. The swung drums, drone, and perc of "Black Light" precede the distorted, broken-beat theme of "Solar Request." With his remix of "Biocentrism," Donato Dozzy loops the feedback into a powerful groove for the DJs. Mastered by Neel (EnissLab Studio, Rome). Pressed at Optimal Media, Germany. Artwork by Christopher Honeywell. Kynant Records (based in Berlin with a UK background) explores and inverts rhythm in techno.
