ICARO 049EP

"'The White Man goes into his church and talks about Jesus. The Indian goes into his tipi and talks with Jesus.' A classical antiquity education consisted of mathematics, geometry, music and astronomy. But it is music that stands eternal beyond all others as the original and eternal language of human transcendence, out-dating the development of sophisticated linguistics. The West very quickly lost sight of its transformative, physical attributes, damning it along with the body to the realm of accidental human traits never to muddle with the higher pursuits of the soul. We can't really blame Plato for that, but then, would he be capable of grasping the rites of a Southwestern American Indian medicine ceremony? Probably much better than most of us in the 'modern world' today. All we know is that somewhere along the way technological man lost his power to wield magic, something that we have constantly tried to reclaim through musical expropriation, assimilation and cultural tourism. The medicine man with his peyote is infinitely more knowledgeable than any well-versed technocrat, and it is that original knowledge that we problematically seek---problematically because we have, in one way or another, passively or actively aided in its extermination. We long for a way to end the mind as an intellectually-entangled barrier, to open it up to the real visceral contact with truth and spirituality we can't find in church, at school, at home or even with our families. It is an envy we have murdered for, and will do so again soon. But it is the only form of communication that we actually understand innately, and it is that desire to return that has fueled our efforts to reconnect once more. Perhaps one day we'll learn not just to talk to Jesus, or Allah, or Shiva, but to ourselves and to each other as well, sincerely, on two feet, to seize the divine from the far reaches of the stars and to bring it down to earth to dance, play and sing in a new form of ritual that thirsts for blood no more. This 12" is the 1st installment of a new series exploring psychedelia, psychedelics, musical rite and the Peyote rituals of the American Indian Church." Silkscreened front cover.

Infectious Latin groovers with lots and lots of American Afro funky touches! Xingu were a late '60s band from Chile. Seems like the band clearly heard plenty of 45s from the U.S., as the tracks on this set have them grooving in a style that recalls the best of The Meters, Kool & The Gang, and other classic funk acts! Featuring an insane instrumental funk remake of Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick" -- complete with a breaking drum solo -- and also includes great versions of "Hot Pants," "Tanga Boo Gonk," and "Black Power" -- plus the smoking originals "493 West" and "Baja A Las Chiquillas." Truly awesome. File next to La Kabala and Rabbits And Carrots.

This 1969 album, originally released on Odeon Records, is one of the better Brazilian funk albums of its time. Eduardo Araujo started his career as a garage rocker that also went into mainstream pop. In between, he recorded some awesome albums like this soul-drenched set, which features several songs by no less that Tim Maia. Maia also wrote Brazilified arrangements for North American soul songs by Arthur Conley and Smokey Robinson. Interesting crossover tunes with the best from Detroit and New York soul but with a Brazilian flavor. This is pretty smokin' boogaloo mania.

There is some kind of mystery connection with Brazilian artists and their LPs recorded in Mexico. According to Loronix, LPs by Carlos Lyra, Wilson Simonal, Tamba Trio and João Gilberto were all recorded in Mexico. Leny Andrade's Gravado No Mexico (1966) is really hard to find and perhaps unknown to many bossa jazz aficionados. This is the kind of record that even if you do know it exists, you've never had the chance to listen to it. What you get here is a classic masterpiece recorded at the right time with the right personnel. Leny is accompanied by Breno Sauer (vibraphone), Portinho (drums), Erneo Eger (bass) and Adão Pinheiro (piano).

This is Zito Righi e Seu Conjunto's Alucinolândia (1969), originally released on a tiny label, featuring nice vocals from Sonia Santos and Zito Righi (sax). This record is a TRUE rarity; in spite of having crazy, beautiful cover artwork, this is a really solid release, from start to end. Some of the best samba-rock recorded. Underground dance classics that have very deep grooves.

"Dope Brothers brings you another classic rare 45" repressing, this time two classic joints from Lexington, Kentucky, funk band Manzel. Labeled by DJs Kon and Amir as one of the 50 Greatest Hip-Hop Samples of All Time, many will recognize the sci-fi roller skating groove of Space Funk' as the sample used by Large Professor, Eric B. and Rakim ('The R') and others."

Already gaining heavy plays from scene leaders Floating Points, SBTRKT and with rinseage everywhere from Ronnie Scotts to Fabric, these are two white label-only secret weapons -- versions straight from the epicenter of the London scene. Utilizing a trace element of The Raah Project's stunning "Trick Of The Light" vocal and building two entirely new tracks around them, the producer in question somehow manages to traverse funkier movements, weighted Bollywood-style string swells, with more gorgeous, teched-up and dubbed-down beat feelings.

"Two classic C2 remixes on one piece of wax. 'Experience' by Aquarhythms gets a dreamy, beatdown refix, creating a brooding intro with cascading synths and reverberated vocal parts. Very submerged, flowing production with plenty of phasing and flanging across thick pads and lush atmosopheres. After an extended introduction, the beat finally drops and is Detroitian in nature, with a nagging little synth hook added for good measure. Proper electronic soul music, with a sophisticated arrangement and strong attention to detail. Jonny L's 'This Time' is next under the knife (or the mouse). Again, the C2 influence is clearly audible from the outset, as a low sub-bass rhythm chugs along and will cause soundsystems to fart with delight. When the full sequence does drop, its a joyous, feel-good track but restrained and sexy with it. Lots of thick, major-key pad chords, seductive female vocal and live percussion. A bit club, a bit carnival, and very enjoyable listening. Two by-gone classics pulled out the cosmos for your late night dancing pleasure."

"Cool compilation featuring the best tracks from the two Wynder K. Frog studio albums: Sunshine Super Frog (1967) and Out Of The Frying Pan (1968). Top notch Hammond-fuelled mod-soul instrumental grooves by this British musician related to such big names as Spencer Davis Group, Graham Bond and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Including his killer, club-friendly covers of 'Green Door', 'Jumpin' Jack Flash', 'Hi-Heel sneakers', 'Sunshine Superman'."

PILGRIM 001EP
|
"There seems to be a bit of a mystery around this record. And let some of this mystery remain. These two remixes of a fairly obscure song are pretty well known to the public, as for the last year or so they were regulars both in live sets of Jacek Sienkiewicz, and DJ sets of Ricardo Villalobos. Right now these two artists share credits to this obviously outstanding release. 'Pilgrim' is a vital, mesmerizing, uplifting piece of magic. One can assume, telling from the unusual, muezzin-like chanting, that it comes from some forgotten Oriental library record. In fact, it was written in the seventies by a respected Polish composer and extraordinary vocalist to the words of 19th century Polish poet. Now you can hear its modern, not to say futuristic, interpretation by two of the most forward-thinking electronic musicians from two different sides of the globe. Jacek's version certainly has an epic feel, majestically developing hypnotic vocal line among a swooping array of unstoppable, driving beat. This is the prime cut of this song, guaranteed to draw attention of any listener and hold it through its full 12+ minutes. Ricardo's mix, on the other hand, drifts more towards its ethnic connotations, being heavier on percussion while retaining its evocation of a desert tribal chant. Already in heavy circulation with some of the most prolific DJs, this is a strictly limited release which gained a sort of a classic reputation far before it finally surfaced on vinyl. No doubt a timeless record, and a truly moving nod to the past by the artists of the future."

BOKBOK 001EP
|
"One of the most exciting record comes from London's Bok Bok, offering up two refixes of Crazy Cousins 'Bongo Jam' and Dre Skull's 'I Want You.' The cliche 'One to watch' was made for this fella, from his potent mixtapes mashing grime, house, garage and UK Bass, to his forthcoming tracks for Dress 2 $weat, Bok Bok is dangerously onto something. On the A-side we've got a refit of Dre Skull's club anthem 'I Want You,' engaging with elements of tougher NYC and Chicago house and locked into heavyweight UKF bass with a proper bashment fired flavour. On the flipside he rewires Crazy Cousins' infectious 'Bongo Jam' with a superbly tempered blend of dirty chromed synth timbres and cool rushing snare rolls executed with a knowing restraint, built to tease the dancefloor. Both tracks are tried and tested dancefloor destroyers -- clubs everywhere will be eternally grateful. Sick."

"Considered by many worldwide collectors as one of the best hard-rock albums ever, Rockcelona's La Bruja saw the light in 1978 and sank without trace. The band came from Barcelona and could be seen as one of the early Spanish proto-punk bands along with La Banda Trapera Del Rio. Killer sound with primitive English/Spanish vocals and heavy, and I mean heavy fuzz-wah wah assaults from start to finish! First time ever reissue with remastered sound and original artwork. A must!"

"And here it is. Another highly anticipated dubstep record. Plastician has been teasing us for an age with this tune on his Rinse FM shows and in his live sets. 'Guilty (Plastician Remix)' -- Kosheen finally hits wax and does not disappoint, with its grime framework and ultra-heavy bass line, this one is built for the warehouse rave."
