PETS 113EP
|
An old friend returns to Pets Recordings. Three years after his Polyphonic EP (PETS 068EP, 2016), Catz 'n Dogz bring the legend that is Mathias Kaden back on the label and the results speak for themselves... Following his recent barnstormers on Avotre and Rekids, both "Square" and "Distant Horizon" deliver in that unhurried, cosmic journey-like way Kaden has made his signature over the years: gentle layering, subtle moment, palpable atmospheres but the drive and underbelly of a bulldozer. "Square" kicks off the show with an eight-minute adventure into deep, warm undulating acid. Heavy subs, fluid drums, and a persistent spoken vocal texture, this one wraps you up like a cloak. "Distant Horizon", meanwhile, whips that cloak off so quickly it will send you spinning deeper and deeper into the celestial rabbit hole. A ten-minute Mathias epic, it warms up with a progressive rolling feel for a good few minutes before you're suddenly derailed into a trippy, hazy brew of weird bass bubbles and some rather outlandish spoken word. Poetry in high-grade technoid motion. And the motion doesn't stop there... Ever ones to get involved, Catz 'n Dogz get their paws on "Distant Horizon" and give it their own gritty, grainy, trippy twist. Two parts tribal, one part bass, all parts peak time, this doesn't just stare out at the horizon but flies you right over it. Two beautiful originals, one killer remix. Be there or be "Square"...

Mathias Kaden presents his EP, Polyphonic. The title track sits somewhere between Paperclip People and Basement Jaxx. Its sterling acid house hook lays down the foundations while a dizzying array of FX and sonic chem-trails swoop, bend and flare above the groove like fireworks. "NoKick", as the name suggests, doesn't have a kick drum, just a swinging break with a classic 2 Bad Mice-style old-school bassline and even more laser-blazing FX trickery that rifles the spectrum with head-turning, twisted dexterity. Complete with crowd cheers and carnival whoops and hollers, this is the ultimate DJ tool.

Deetron are particularly fond of the analogous and sublimely swinging synth bassline of "Soulmakers". However, he modulates it into a wild, joyfully soaring sound artifact. The duo Pulshar drapes its remix in a warm dub blanket with many delays, soft strings and smoothly bouncing bass drums. The Spaniard Uner attends to the energetic, playful "Tangerine" and creates a powerfully vibrant house music track with a dark techno tendency. The remix of "Wisdoms" is a special matter of the heart since Mathias Kaden's brother in "grime" Daniel Stefanik draws the piano house anthem into a furious Detroit techno vortex.

FREUDE 071EP

Mathias Kaden follows his acclaimed 2015 second album Energetic (FREUDE 013CD/LP) with an EP of album remixes. On his remix of "Energie (feat. Rocko Schamoni)," Kompakt cofounder Michael Mayer induces euphoria from the track's calm conclusion by going far afield with the synth waves. Dresden's Cuthead, working at the intersection of deep house, soul, and hip hop, brings out a relaxed, dancing lightness with his remix of "Korokana." Redshape gives "Clarity" more drive as Sophie Taylor's vocals loop into the analog acid-inspired synth sounds. Nick Curly delivers hypnotic, elegant, minimal house with his remix of "Get Phunky (feat. Aquarius Heaven)."

FREUDE 013LP
|
Double LP version. DJ and producer Mathias Kaden has been on an energetic musical route since the beginning of his career. In his preferences he has never stuck to just one sound. From filigreed micro-house and percussive minimalism to his collaborations with Marek Hemmann and the Leipzig band Marbert Rocel (under the name Karocel), Mathias Kaden has continuously revealed new facets of his work. Six years after his widely acclaimed 2009 debut, Studio 10 (VA 004CD/030LP), Kaden now refers to both his musical roots as well as his current experiences as an internationally travelling DJ. With Energetic, he gives something back to the dancefloor, namely a positive and timeless vibe deeply rooted in funk and the dignity of the early house years. For Kaden, as for many others, this early house ethos forms the foundation for a classic club sound. His new warmth had already started to come through in 2013 on his Tentakle EP on Desolat (DESOLAT 020X-EP) and "Fin," an exclusive track for his Watergate mix compilation (WG 014CD). Between autumn 2014 and spring 2015 Kaden took some time to produce Energetic. He invited the open-minded solo pianist and Karocel-partner Martin Kohlstedt to join him in the studio. The results are most apparent on the hymn-like, uplifting "Wisdoms," which also features live drums played by Kaden's longtime school friend Herby, a gifted drummer with his own studio in Gera, Germany. The bassline on "Get Phunky" is another live recording, this time from Dave Daniel of German band Lilabungalow. Kaden has also rediscovered his analog synthesizers. Juno 106, Moog Litte Phatty, and Moog Minitaur shape the original sound of Energetic as much as the spoken-word elements of a number of vocalists, including American legend Foremost Poets, whose 1998 track "Moon-Raker" is one of Kaden's all-time favorites; exceptional hip hop and dancehall performer Aquarius Heaven; Zoe Xenia; Sophie Taylor; and Rocko Schamoni, star of German underground pop entertainment, who closes the album with a half-spiritual, half-laconic speech about the effectiveness of energy. Mario "Marlow" Weise, also known for his work with Sonar Kollektiv, provided the tonal finishing on the album. Energetic captures the manifold emotional billows of a club night. It concentrates on the essentials -- few elements, full of energy; more soul and history than quick dancefloor effects. It is an album that is very close to Mathias Kaden as a person, which also shows in his track-by-track notes.

The man behind the black wax is Mathias Kaden, whose exclusive track now finds its new home in the Watergate label catalog. "Fin" appeared the Watergate 014 (WG 014CD) compilation. The track warms up with an aesthetically-stumbling beat pattern, gathers speed attended by rattling hi-hats, and suddenly turns into a smooth piano-break. After this grace period, the all-round tool unfolds its full force and tramps down the dancefloor. Josh Wink contributed a remix to this bomb, placing the hypnotic house track in a totally new context. Dopey bleeps wriggle through the drums and leave woozy traces in the audiences' heads.

The soul behind the new Watergate compilation belongs to a dedicated DJ and house-enthusiast: Mathias Kaden attends to number 14 and gives proof not only of his technical finesse but also of his ability to combine contemporary releases with evergreen classics. He is always confident in his intuition and ability to freak out any crowd, no matter what time or location he plays. All the same with his own productions. He released his debut album Studio 10 on the Berlin-based label Vakant in 2009, alongside EPs on Freude Am Tanzen and recently also Desolat. That Kaden has a lot of love to spread is also being reflected in the compilation's dreamy prelude for which he elected one of this summer's ear-catchers: DJ Koze's and Apparat's "Nices Wölkchen." After some minutes, a relentless old-school vibe sneaks in, which finds an early peak in Ron Trent's "Kids at Play." Between two exclusive tracks from Rodriguez Jr. and Marco Resmann, Kaden proves that there must be a rhythm-machine beating behind his chest. In the middle, the mix rattles with Alejandro Paz' "El House" against its proper destination: house music without compromises. The last third develops an endearing atmosphere, to which Watergate contributes two more exclusive tracks. Mathias Kaden's personal farewell is named "Fin" -- but before he keeps silent, Daniel Stefanik with "Distillery" delivers the closing remarks in an exclusive edit for this CD. With this Watergate comp Kaden has achieved an energetic and elegant mix with repeat potential. Other artists include: Merveille & Crosson, Alix Alvarez, Audio Werner, Daze Maxim, Ricardo Villalobos, Emanuel Satie, Motorcity Drum Ensemble, Moodymann, Christian Burkhardt, The Mole, DJ Sprinkles, Tapesh & Maximiljan, Roman Flügel, Todd Terry & Simone Vitullo, Vjuan Allure, and Kink & Marc Romboy.

Kaden delivers four killer tracks which are as expertly programmed as one would expect from the veteran producer, and designed to get the dancefloor moving. The third and final remix package for Mathias Kaden's highly-acclaimed album Studio 10 (VA 004CD/VA 030LP), featuring two reworks by Onur Özer and DeWalta. Özer's "Hâre Remix" is a massive, bass-driven rework for Kaden's "Chazz," taking the track to a deeper, more jazzy level. David Koch aka DeWalta takes on "Ikenga," maintaining the acidic vibe of the original and adding his very own dancefloor funk.

Here's a set of splendid remixes for Mathias Kaden's highly-acclaimed album Studio 10 (VA 004CD/VA 030LP). The A-side sees a remix by Luna City Express and Matthias Tanzmann, who reworked the 36-second disco interlude "Roots" to a full-length house hitter. On the B-side, Studio 10 collaborator Florian Schirmacher and his Wareika project rework "State Of Stasis" (featuring vocals from Gjaezon). Schirmacher manages to turn this Detroit-influenced tune into something crazy from outer space. So get with it.

Late in 2009, Mathias Kaden's debut album Studio 10 (VA 004CD/LP) was released, garnering positive feedback from the scene's most important DJs. Vakant follows up with a series of remixes for this very important album. DJ Koze lays into the album's dub track "Kawaba," featuring the voice of singer Tomomi Ukumori. Deeply-pitched vocals and Koze's very own groove give this remix a very special appeal. AFFKT delivers a peak-time tech-house remix of "Mascleta" that is already causing a storm.

This is the debut full-length release by Gera/Jena, Germany-based minimalist, Mathias Kaden. About 2 years in the making, Studio 10 takes Mathias Kaden's life-long work as DJ and producer, worldwide tours, 20-something years of listening and thinking, machines and people, and wraps a bow around it all. Always taking his time with production, Mathias' focus on quality over quantity continues to pay dividends, no matter the state of the economy. Unique in many ways, Studio 10 is also unique for the producer himself. Never before has Mathias incorporated into his music so much hardware, field recordings, messages, and invited friends and orchestral musicians to collaborate. Each track has a message waiting to be interpreted, from the first track "Intro Ducing," borrowing from Bob Marley, to the aptly-named "1981" (featuring vocals by Gjaezon), significant in that it was the year of birth for the most important and timeless instrument in Mathias' studio, the TR808. Similar to his Vakant brethren, Mathias is the instrumentalist and performer, rather than the programmer and sampler. A Fender Rhodes from jazz pal Lars Mäurer on "Defender," Mathias's 1970s Lowrey organ played by Florian Schirmacher on "Lowrey," violin by Claudia Ander-Donathand on "Re Menor," and flugelhorn by Martin Rudloff on "Panic Stricken," all pull and push the music in ever-expanding directions, but at the center, the 808 welds it all together. In addition, vocalists (and lyricists) Ian Simmonds, Gjaezon, and Tomomi Ukumori impart their talents to help articulate the messages that pervade Studio 10. To call the album house is akin to referring to a 1982 Château Lafite-Rothschild as wine. Closer to Chicago than to anywhere else in sound and in Mathias' heart, Studio 10 finds its home in more intimate settings where its nuance, ideas, and depth can all come shining through.

Mathias Kaden returns to Vakant with this double A-side EP. Moron presents us with Mathias' continuously evolving huff and puff, heave and ho, badonkadonk sound. Like the rest of his work, "Moron" is a fusion of his diverse influences -- African, Latin, and modern German rhythms move the wallflower to the middle of the dancefloor. "Shetani" encompasses so much in 9 minutes -- choir, jazz sax and hovering pads -- that all one can do is hold their hands aloft.

Mathias Kaden presents his first culinary solo trip for Freude-Am-Tanzen. Three pots are stewing, presented with German tidiness and foreign spice. Minimal blends with maximal in just the right balance. "Swahili": industrial tones are caramelized with drums, piano and flute without being too sweet. "Lucidas": technoid, but perfect for the early morning hours. "Saloee": a nutritious techno dish with voodoo flavors -- a tribal ode to deconstructing a club. Enjoy your meal.

"The Synkope EP ushers in a new sound for Mathias, one that is more full and less percussive than before yet also one that will not leave previous fans in the dark. Taking his cue from his keen knowledge of the world's dancefloors, Kaden translates this awareness straight onto vinyl without losing sight of today's complex sequences and sound structures. With the flood of faceless releases that threaten to sink even the most discerning record buyer these days. There is a growing sense of urgency to make records that will remain classic and listenable even 10 years into the future. If you don't mind us saying we think this might just be one..."
