MANIK returns to Ovum with Recourse. MANIK teams up with LA word-painter Cari Golden. Momentum maintained throughout; things take an unexpected dubby twist as the 'VHS' shimmers and ripples with synth insistency. Rolling hi-hats, hip-snapping clap attacks and a timeless vocal shot build around each other, occasionally revealing a fully-juiced bassline swinging and rolling with total consistency. "Los Angeles Dub" is straight up jack, no chaser: a grainy, analog moment of total unabashed machine-melting funk.

Having already dropped dance-floor bombs on the likes of Hot Creations and Ovum, MANIK's Weights and Measures EP solidifies his emerging reputation as fresh voice on the scene. The release kicks off with "Thirsty Crow" a tightly wound groove that breaks down the barriers between house and techno effortlessly. "Weights & Measures" is a deeply acidic affair that finds space for some luscious pads, while "Complexity" riffs off a classic house vibe but throws in some deeply leftfield sounds and rhythms.

New York-based DJ and producer M A N I K aka Christopher Manik follows releases for Ovum Recordings, Poker Flat, and Hot Creations with his debut for BPitch Control. Synth-funk track "Echo 3000" features a 4/4 beat enlarged by bouncing basslines, gritty kicks, and hypnotic vocal samples. "Acid Sandwich (feat. MC Kew G)" matches a pulsating 303 against some rough 909 claps, with M A N I K's vocals and the overall raw aesthetic recalling Green Velvet. "Power" evolves into a deep, pushing floor beast with rave arpeggios. The hefty chords of "House of Cards" also reflect the EP's old-school charm.

A long-standing veteran of Josh Wink's Ovum imprint, Manik presents his fifth release on the label, an EP of raw, chunky, house-influenced cuts. "Wink KD" opens with a catchy groove and hypnotic vocal sample, before the breakdown introduces an infectious acid bassline. "In Walks Bourbon" smooths things out here with a more head-bobbing groove, but don't let that fool you -- the track builds and builds with a rolling bass that takes the track into overdrive. The jacking "House Cut 2" features catchy synth stabs and various vocal samples, with snappy percussion that drives the track to a frenetic build.

A long-standing veteran of Josh Wink's Ovum imprint, the House Cut 1 EP marks Manik's fourth offering on the label and maintains the high quality you've come to expect from an artist who is comfortably at the top of his game. True to its name, the EP consists of a trio of raw, chunky, house-influenced cuts which vary in style and function. The title-track itself lures the listener in with bubbling synths floating over a clipped 4x4 beat, before giving way to a hectic salvo of staccato clap rushes and ride cymbals. It's an extremely versatile record with something for everyone.

Christopher Manik aka M A N I K returns to Ovum with an ode to his beloved former studio, "I'm Nice Like That," and presents a trio of new cuts. "The title track is sort of a love song trapped inside a sleazier beat," says Chris, as he also owns up to having provided the vocals on the track. "Amber Knife" comes heavy with its FM bass and 303 action before "Weekend Is 4 Lovers" rounds out the EP.

Scoring the soundtrack of a new electronic frontier, MANIK, the young New Yorker named by Mixmag and DJ magazine as the artist to watch for 2011, delivers a prototype debut album Armies Of The Night for Josh Wink's Ovum Recordings. As the trend for stateside dance music continues to take hold, MANIK propels it further forward with a sublimely original album. Stitched together by Ovum creator, Josh Wink, Armies... is a continuous ebb of energy that continues to surprise as it gains momentum. Inspired by his surroundings in New York City as well as the 1979 cult classic film The Warriors, MANIK portrays the raw, urban grittiness of the city and mimics the picture's rendering of the underground gang world. Track titles such as "We're From Coney," "City Kids" and "Don't Stop Don't Run" as well as frequent samples hint at this arcane theme. Touching on a slow and seductive take on house music that fellow Americans Soul Clap, Nicolas Jaar and Wolf + Lamb have brought to the forefront of consciousness, but elevating it to new plains fusing jacking beats, acid funk basslines, and creative hip-hop sampling techniques, MANIK carves his own niche sound through Armies Of The Night. A diverse collection that ripples across generations, Armies Of The Night reaches into the glamorous world of disco in "Nightfall," taps into classic jacking house for "Ruckus 8OH8," plays with urban flavors for "Haterville" (made specifically for the Haters) and "Another Day" and dives into the eerie, futuristic plains of techno in "Don't Stop Don't Run," all the while maintaining an intoxicating, nocturnal spirit. Interspersed with playful interludes featuring MANIK's peers and influences, this musical voyage continually involves the listener in an interactive story of how it came to be. The result is an album that matures with each listen, apt for every situation and a true reflection of MANIK's pure and honest musical philosophy.
